Sightseeing and Some
Places of interest in the Limousin
These are the places we've been whilst
sightseeing in the Limousin and places we've seen in no particular order. Then again maybe you should buy a good guide book.
. .
Bellac
It's our nearest large town we've been here a lot. In the centre there are all the usual shops, cafes and banks and such. Sometimes there is a market on don't ask us what days though we've never quite got the hang of remembering things like that. There is a good kebab shop in the centre sometimes we are lucky enough to find it open and satisfy our desire for
takeaway food.
On the outskirts are the big supermarkets Champion and Intermarche and the DIY store Bricomarche. There is a lovely view if you walk behind the church and benches to sit and admire it whilst eating a sticky bun. If you are particularly lucky someone in the apartments behind will be playing heavy metal music at full volume which really adds to the ambiance.
There is a
restaurant down near the river too. One day we'll get the chance to try it
out.
The Dolmen at Breuilaufa
This is one of many in the Limousin. You follow the signpost from the N147 just past Berneuil. It is about 20 yards into a field. There is no visitor centre or even an information board and no empty beer cans either. It's just in the middle of the French countryside. Apparently it was a burial place and there were some grave goods found there.
It felt very still and very old. As you can see the hay in the field had just been cut and baled but a wide margin was left around the dolmen. Inside on a ledge was a small sheaf of wheat.
and the other two Dolmens near Blond
Follow the sign in Blond for Dolmens and you will find these two which are about a couple of km from Blond and about a kilometre away from each other.
It makes a very pleasant days drive around to take in these and the other megaliths in the area. Like this menhir
To get here follow the signs for megaliths from the village of Mortemart.
Mortemart
Is a really pretty village. An ideal place to stop off for lunch while driving round the megaliths in the area. On Friday mornings during the Summer there is a country market in the square with crafts and organic produce on sale.
There are frequent exhibitions at the chateau also
The Chapelle at Vaulry
Damn damn damn damn damn why didn't we take the camera out with us? The Chapelle can be reached by following the signs for the creperie on the road just outside Vaulry. You go uphill on a winding tree lined road. Remember this is the Monts de Blond you climb
until you come to the creperie which looked like a nice spot for some lunch but we had sandwiches. There is a car park there.
Then you go on up the hill on foot. You go past some gites owned by the Commune of Vaulry, these looked really nice sort of wood and stone chalets in a lovely setting Les Mas they were called I think.
At the top is a church and an absolutely stunning view across the Limousin countryside.
There are lots of tracks for walking and mountain biking all around
The Airport at Limoges
We've been here a fair few times. It used to be a big tent while they were building the new terminal building with a typical
smoky tabac in the corner that had the non smokers doing that non smoking kind of cough that they do. Now there is a new terminal building there with a much more airporty but still small cafe area. All in all it's like a small airport. You can't take your dogs in any more which is a shame. There is nothing much at the other side of the security gate other than some chairs and a water cooler so don't go through too early.
