They cover the quarry in seeds, saplings and call it a wildlife reserve; I can use everything I have purchased one way or another to its full potential, thus lessening my ecological footprint by buying fewer materials from now on.
My new kitchen is one of my first attempts at using salvage from our property in the Limousin. The wood planks for shelf’s etc are from the barn. These were rough sawn planks just over an inch thick. Using a plane on these is hard work as the saw tooth marks are quite deep. But I have lots of these planks which need using and they do make sturdy shelves.
To buy wood would be madness when these are plentiful and I even found a pair of old doors for under the sink. The work-tops had to be bought in as I have had experience of tiled and pure wood work-surfaces in kitchens and they are a non starter. It’s not just an aesthetic decision it is one based on hygiene; they are easy to clean and I don’t intend to become a Luddite just because I ‘Lean-Green'. I know the hygiene comment may not quite relate to the kitten in a basket but I never said I was logical. Sometimes modern materials really are better all round and laminated work-tops are superior in every way. Well it’s not finished but the kitchen area has shown me that I can use my wood pile for projects round the house.
